Domain Frontrunning: A Ghost In The Machine

ICANN can't find evidence the practice really exists, and the one entity who says he has proof won't provide that proof.

It's not like enacting policies against ghosts, exactly. You don't need proof of the existence of frontrunning to enact a policy against it. But in this case, proof might have helped Network Solutions not look so bad.

Last month, NetSol came under fire for automatically registering domains that customers had searched for on their site and then jacking up the price of the domains for a four-day period. NetSol defended the practice as protection against frontrunning, which is the practice of registering a domain someone is searching for and then jacking up the price.

At least NetSol's protection fee was a set price, $34.99 for four days worth of protection, just until they could return the domain within ICANN's grace period.

KY3 NEWS INVESTIGATION: Some animal facilities go years between ...

Missouri has among the toughest animal care laws in the nation. A KY3 News investigation finds, however, that the law isn't always enforced.

Hip dysplasia is a disease that's easy to spot in dogs. Shawna Thompson was heartbroken when she found out her dog, Biscuit, has it.

“At one time, she was only walking on front legs and I wondered if I should put her down," said Thompson.

“It looks like a 12-year-old rottweiler's hips instead of a 1-year-old Chihuahua hips," said Dr. Heath Wiseman, a veterinarian.

Luckily, surgery is helping Biscuit but, because hip dysplasia is a hereditary disease, Wiseman says Biscuit's parents should never have been bred in the first place, “because it's likely to pass it on."

Breeders, like dog pounds, rescue organizations and shelters are regulated to protect puppies like Biscuit.

Election Madness

The formulation of a culture of acceptance of the old and second hand. I do not suggest that any one leader do this. It takes a group of well known and respected people to lay out and direct the plan. Keep it simple and rally the citizens. Do you have the guts Nader and Zinn?

Consumers lose out on generic-drug savings

Intense competition among generic drug makers has been a boon for pharmacies, but consumers aren't reaping the gains, the federal Competition Bureau said Monday.

The marketing of generic drugs needs to be changed, the bureau said in a report, so individuals – along with the governments and insurance companies that pick up the cost of many drugs – can glean the benefits of lower drug prices.

"Competition stops at the pharmacy level and does not accrue to the end payer," Competition Bureau commissioner Sheridan Scott said in a speech to the C.D. Howe Institute in Toronto Monday after the study was released.

With 15 generic drug makers now selling into the Canadian market, competition is more intense than ever, Ms. Scott said. In 2005, 43 per cent of drugs dispensed in retail pharmacies in Canada were generics – the copycat drugs that can be sold only after patents expire on brand-name products.

ABQ remodelers honored at banquet

The Remodelers Council of the Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico gave out 27 awards to Albuquerque metro area remodelers on Thursday.

The annual Excellence in Remodeling Awards, held this year at the Marriott Pyramid North in Albuquerque, recognizes residential remodelers for excellence in the areas of design, craftsmanship and skill.

The two top honors, Grand Award-Design and Grand Award-Build, went to Remodel Inc. for Medium Kitchen Design and There's No Place Like Home for Large Kitchen Remodel, respectively.

There's No Place Like Home took a total of 13 awards.

Other winners included PSI Remodeling, Jade Enterprises, Pennington Builders and The Branch.

"These remodelers are among the best of what central New Mexico has to offer," said Jim Folkman, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association.
