| Tri-City plants among top polluters
Overall, the EPA said toxic releases in 2006 from 1,357 facilities in California were down 2.8 percent to 45.2 million pounds from the previous year. Tesoro's refinery historically has lagged behind the other refineries in installing upgrades. It has been the region's biggest polluter every year since at least 2003, according to an EPA toxics database. Mike Marcy, a Tesoro spokesman, said most of the toxic material reported by the refinery was ammonia that air quality regulators require to control smog. A $575 million upgrade that is scheduled tobe done this year will slash toxic pollution from the Tesoro refinery to about 500,000 pounds a year, Marcy said. "This is replacing 1950s technology that was here when Tesoro bought the refinery in 2002," he said.
Cherries: A sweet treat that's good for you
Cherries will always be associated with our first president, George Washington. With President's Day just passed, research shows there are other reasons to celebrate cherries — they can help you lose weight and prevent a host of diseases. Cherries contain a high percentage of water. Increasing water consumption boosts energy levels and increases metabolism to help lose excess weight. Cherries also are high in potassium and low in sodium, which helps control water retention, according to www.weightlossforall.com. Cherries are very low in calories, with about 80 per cup, and contain just a trace of fat. They also are a good source of vitamin A and antioxidants. They also contain 19 times as much beta carotene as blueberries or strawberries. Cherries contain many compounds that are beneficial in fighting some cancers because they remove free radicals.
Ralph Kiner - 1955 :
Carter would spend the remainder of the 80's as one of the American Leagues top power hitters. An annual All-Star snub as a member of the Indians, Carter drove in 121 RBI in 1986, joined the 30/30 club in 1987, and registered 35 HR's and 105 RBI in 1989. December 6, 1989 - Indians Ship Slugger to Padres for Future Stars: This trade helped shape the great Indian teams of the 90's as they sent their top player Joe Carter to San Diego for C Sandy Alomar Jr. and 2B Carlos Baerga. Alomar is considered by most Tribe fans as the greatest catcher in team history and had a career year in 1997, winning All-Star MVP honors and leading the Tribe to the World Series. Baerga played a key role in the Indians World Series run of 1995 and was a three time All-Star as a member of the Tribe. June 28, 2002 - Tribe fans angered over trade with Expos: Yep, I was one of those angry fans the day GM Mark Shaprio sent All-Star pitcher Bartolo Colon to the Montreal Expos for 1B Lee Stevens and three prospects; P Cliff Lee, INF Brandon Phillips, and OF Grady Sizemore.
Shorter menu could be big for Mt. Pleasant pizza eatery
With Andolini's, Bacco, Iacofano's Deli and Pizzeria, Pasta Grille, Sette, and now La Pizzeria, it is easy to satisfy your appetite for most things Italian. La Pizzeria is in a strip mall shopping center at Coleman and Houston Northcutt boulevards in a space formerly occupied by a pizza restaurant. The new owners have spruced up the place by enclosing a narrow side patio, adding mood lighting by way of an odd assortment of stringed lights, dried flowers and plastic tablecloths. It straddles the crossroads of eat-in and carry-out design. There is a tall counter where you can place your order to go. Outdoor seating, a few tables in the front of the restaurant and the side patio provide table service. A chalkboard lists the daily specials (which could include an appetizer, pizza, panini, pasta or dessert) along with a pasta menu of baked ziti with Bolognese sauce, lasagna, gnocchi with a Gorgonzola sauce or a red sauce in the style of Sorrento.
Tuna fishery stink in Wewak is ‘gross’
Despite the risk of being physically attacked, I intend to start publicly querying certain negative changes continuing to take place in Wewak and offer, when possible, practical solutions. I am mainly doing this out of concern for future generations. Leading Kreer landowner Francis Kuru'fher recently advised the people of Papua New Guinea through the media about the "unbearable" and "stinky smell" emanating from the South Seas Tuna Corporation factory in Wewak town; which "pollutes Wewak's air zone daily". "How long should this continue?" Kuruf'her, a businessman and former political candidate, was reported as asking. Kuru'fher's concern is no exaggeration. The truth is that the smell is so gross that it has made me want to throw up and become angry every time I have had to breathe it in.
