Storm's Victims Remembered In Castalian Springs

In Castalian Springs, Sumner County, victims worked to pick up the pieces Friday, four days after a tornado ripped through the area.

Neighbors said at least four homes in an area just off Governor’s Hall Road were completely wiped out.

Ramona Justice’s was one of them. She did not survive the storm.

Her neighbor, Rosemary Chambers, said Justice was a school bus driver for special needs kids in Sumner County. She had four grown children and a granddaughter.

"It’s sad, it’s said," Chambers said. "I wish everyone had gotten out but you just don’t know, don’t know... .

Black Smokers: Extraterrestrial Life on Earth!

At the bottom of the oceans, the lowest level of the ocean waters, submarine volcanoes are found. They erupt periodically, but also phenomena similar to others that accompany terrestrial volcanoes, such as submarine geysers, can be found and are called hydrothermal vents (hot vents) or black smokers. The submarine vents, linked to the submarine volcanic activity, trigger an unusual life abundance on the bottom of the ocean, at depths of 800-3,500 m (2,660-10,366 ft) in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, but also in the Red Sea. In these areas, animal communities emerge, formed of gigantic species, if we compare them to their counterparts at the surface. These animals are usually de-pigmented, white (but not necessarily) and blind, even if some worms and bivalves can be bright red due to the respiratory pigment hemoglobin.

The Other Women to Watch

Grain prices have reached record highs and oil prices are flirting with $100 a barrel. At first blush, this could seem daunting, but Ms. Woertz sees opportunity.

The high oil prices mean the world is more conscious about energy security, Ms. Woertz says. That translates into greater demand for corn-based ethanol and soy-based biodiesel -- both key products that ADM makes. And while the higher grain prices have cut into biofuel's profitability, it has prompted farmers to plant more acreage, which means more grain to handle and ship across the Corn Belt and overseas.

But with more mouths to feed as the population grows, there are growing worries about the long-term sustainability of farming for fuel instead of food. Ms. Woertz envisions expanding ADM's biofuels production beyond corn and beans.

Business in Bali

After all, emissions are related to wealth and power. Who will rock this boat?

It is convenient to play the cop and villain game. The rich nations know the Chinese, Indians, Brazilians, South Africans and the rest are all in the race to become rich and powerful. They want to be on the same boat. Sinking it then is just not possible. It is a mock fight. But we are all getting hurt.

Energy is the key

It is the world's need for energy-to run everything from factories to cars-that is the cause of climate change. After years of talk, no country has been able to delink growth from a rise in CO2 emissions. No country has shown how to build a low carbon economy or re-invent the growth path-as yet.

This then is the challenge. After years of talk, new renewable energy-wind, solar, geothermal, biofuels-comprises just about 0.5 per cent of the world's primary energy supply.
