Hunt: Bill, the ugly truth of all the news shows is this: they only show what you watch because they only get paid if you watch. It's all about ratings, period. This is why you only see missing blonde girls, O.J. Simpson, car chases and mudslides in California — oh, and Usama bin Laden … because you watch, they put it on. How about the president going to the U.N. to speak alongside our enemies? There is no protocol which should place this country on that level. It only inflates them as we play their games. — Brian (Oscoda, MI) Col. ORU alumni support sought
Uncertainty remained Saturday about what effect Richard Roberts' resignation as president will have on Oral Roberts University, but some observers said it was a step toward improvement.
"I think people are going to be waiting and watching: OK, can it survive without a Roberts at the helm?" said Donald R. Vance, professor of biblical languages and literature.
Vance said he thinks alumni need to support ORU as it undergoes this transition, after being led for 42 years by a Roberts. ORU professors are committed to the school's evangelical Christian mission, but that might not be obvious without a TV minister as president, he said. Christian colleges across the country are led by non-ministers -- "it will just be different for us."
ORU leaders have not addressed what role, if any, Roberts will have at the university.

Oroville's Own: Ray Peel
At 88, Ray Peel wrote a book about his 50 years as a pilot dancing on the edge of crazy. The idea for a book came when Ray decided to clean out a closet where he had been storing junk for many years. While cleaning, he found his old pilot's logs, and the cleaning came to a halt. "As I scanned through the pages, I relived exciting moments of my life," Ray wrote in the introduction to his book. "I remember an old flying friend saying to me, 'Ray, you are going to find out that flying is 90 percent pleasure and 10 percent pure panic.'" The entries in Ray's logs validated his friend's statement and inspired the name of the book, "Flying is 90 Percent Pleasure and 10 Percent Pure Panic: My 50 years as a pilot dancing on crazy." The book is a collection of small stories, almost like vignettes, of some of the highlights of his flying years along with the scares.
